Franklin County has more carriers and more hospital networks than most of Ohio, which sounds like good news until you are the one comparing them. In Columbus the deciding factor is usually the network — whether your doctor at OhioHealth, Mount Carmel, or OSU Wexner is in it — not the premium. Philip compares 22+ carriers at your address and tells you which one actually keeps your doctors.

Columbus is an employer-plan town — until it isn't
Ohio State, Nationwide, JPMorgan Chase, OhioHealth, and the State of Ohio between them cover a large share of Franklin County. That makes Columbus unusual: most people here have decent employer coverage and never need a broker. The ones who do tend to hit it suddenly — a contract role instead of a staff role, a spouse aging into Medicare, a startup that outgrew its first plan, a graduate student falling off a parent's policy at 26. Those are the conversations worth having early rather than at a deadline.
Plan availability and provider networks vary by ZIP code across the metro. Philip pulls exactly what is available at your address.
Franklin County is one of Ohio's more competitive markets. Depending on your ZIP code you will typically see marketplace and off-marketplace plans from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medical Mutual of Ohio, CareSource, Ambetter, Molina Healthcare, and Oscar Health. Central Ohio also has unusually strong hospital-affiliated network options through OhioHealth, Mount Carmel, and the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center — which matters if you already have a doctor you want to keep. Network, not premium, is usually the deciding factor in Columbus.
It depends almost entirely on your subsidy. About 85% of Ohio marketplace enrollees receive a premium tax credit, and the typical net premium statewide is around $103/month for the 2026 plan year. Without a subsidy, an individual plan in Franklin County generally runs several hundred dollars a month depending on age and metal tier. Because the enhanced tax credits expired at the end of 2025 and Ohio insurers raised rates about 18% for 2026, the number you paid last year is not a reliable guide to this year.
If your employer plan covers you and your family well, usually keep it — employer contributions are hard to beat. It is worth a comparison in three situations: your spouse or dependents are on the plan and the family tier is expensive, you are a contractor or adjunct rather than a benefits-eligible employee, or you are approaching 65 and need to coordinate Medicare with employer coverage. That last one has real deadlines and permanent penalties attached, and Columbus's large institutional employers generate a lot of those questions.
Central Ohio has one of the highest Medicare Advantage penetration rates in the country — the Columbus and Cleveland metros both exceed 60%. Franklin County residents typically have dozens of Medicare Advantage options from carriers including UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Humana, Anthem, and Medical Mutual, plus the full range of Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans. Plan availability and provider networks vary by ZIP code, so the right comparison is the one run at your actual address.
Outside the November 1 – January 15 window you need a qualifying life event — losing job-based coverage, moving, marriage, divorce, or a new baby — which opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period. Ohio also expanded Medicaid, so if your household income is below roughly 138% of the Federal Poverty Level you can enroll in Ohio Medicaid at any point in the year. A drop in income mid-year is worth a phone call.
